Bio

Nathalie Tierce is an artist whose multifaceted career encompasses an impressive range of high-profile projects. She has worked alongside cultural icons like Shel Silverstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and The Rolling Stones. She has contributed to period dramas for the BBC and feature films such as Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island and Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Her creative talents extend to painting murals for Disney, showcasing her versatility and depth as an artist.

As a visual storyteller, Tierce employs a fusion of cartoon and symbolic imagery to explore the nuances of psychological struggles. Her work transcends conventional art forms, drawing viewers into a realm where the surreal meets the symbolic. Tierce's artistry also manifests in her three books: Chronicles of Fear—Tales of Woe, Pulling Weeds from a Cactus Garden—Life is Full of Pricks, and Fairy Tale Remnants. These books are surreal fairy tales for adults, combining her mixed-media creations with thought-provoking prose.

Critics and fellow artists alike have acknowledged her distinctive voice and impact. Renowned counterculture cartoonist R. Crumb has described her as "a genuine visionary artist with a direct line to (her) subconscious." The Los Angeles Review of Books’ Jessica McCort notes, "Tierce participates in the Goreyesque tradition of destroying readers’ expectations for the work they have picked up." Artist and animator Dave Cooper praises her paintings as "wonderful, bizarre and genuine, and unsettling," evoking the spirit of George Grosz. Her book Pulling Weeds from a Cactus Garden was featured in The Comics Review U.K.'s "Best of 2021," and Chronicles of Fear - Tales of Woe was included in their "Best of 2023," highlighting the compelling interplay of image and text in her work.

Raised in New York City, Tierce refined her craft at Pratt Institute and L’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Her international experience, including a decade spent in Europe, has deeply influenced her evolution as a painter. Her artwork has appeared in publications such as Mineshaft and Spread Love.

Currently, Nathalie Tierce creates from her studio in Glendale, CA, where she lives with her sculptor husband, Chris Towle, their son Joshua, and two cats, Rosie and Bruce.
